Bryce Kanights Curates Group Photography Show
BRYCE KANIGHTS CURATES THE SEEN OF CHANGE, SHOW FEATURING WORKS BY SKATEBOARDING’S MOST RENOWNED PHOTOGRAPHERS
February 3, 2009, Portland, OR . . . On March 13, 2009, Artery will open a skateboarding photography exhibit called The Seen of Change, curated by Bryce Kanights. Kanights, a San Francisco native who was heavily involved in the city’s street skateboarding movement in the 1990’s, has summoned the works of fellow skateboard industry photographers, with careers spanning close to three decades in skateboarding and photography. The name Seen of Change refers to the ways in which photography has endured a transition from analog to digital over the years, while showcasing how skateboarding has changed and progressed along with it. As well as Kanights, artists in the show include Grant Brittain, Jon Humphries, Joe Brook, and Ryan Flynn. The Seen of Change will open at 6 pm for a kick off celebration on Friday March 13, 2009 at Artery, 4114 N. Vancouver Avenue in Portland, with a bar hosted by Red Bull, and complimentary drinks and food served. Nike SB is a fellow sponsor of the exhibit. The show ends April 30, 2009.
Artwork in the exhibit will be skateboarding-focused and inspired, but not necessarily action photos. For example, Kanights’ Burnside Flared depicts one skater’s lines in the world famous Burnside skatepark lit up at night with only a single flare. Once hung, the photos in the show will chronicle the professional photographers’ travels around the globe capturing interesting people, action and arresting visual elements that form the basis of skateboarding magazines.
A veteran shooter for Thrasher, Slap, The Skateboard Mag as well as a contributor to many other magazines and websites, (including his own, skatedaily.net), Kanights has seen his share of change over the past 30 years in photography and skateboarding. Now a resident of Portland, Kanights has been busy with the re-release of the 1998 skate classic Sick Boys in Nov. 2008 and a February photography show at Portland’s Dept. of Skateboarding. His curation of The Seen of Change should round out his hectic last 6 months nicely.
In Kanights’ words, “This gathering of some of the big guns of skate photography for a group show is very special and I am psyched to bring it all home to Portland,” he said. “Skateboarders and photography fans will appreciate seeing skate history unfolding with works by Grant Brittain up through the new crops of skaters shot by Joe Brook, Jon Humphries and Ryan Flynn. I have a profound respect for these photographers and I am looking forward to seeing skate history documented in one place, here in Portland.”
As well as iconic photographers, Kanights has summoned yet another world class act for the evening’s festivities—his childhood friend, former pro skater and Bones Brigade member, and solo artist Tommy Guerrero will be performing a live acoustic set at the show’s opening on March 13th.
